According to reports by Bloomberg and Dow Jones, Google has stated that there are over 700,000 applications in Google Play right now. This comes days after Apple revealed at the iPad mini launch event that App Store now hosts the same number of applications.
As you can see, Google is pretty close to Apple in terms of applications in the respective app stores. However getting more and more tablet optimised apps in the Google Play is still a big concern for the search giant.
Company is hoping that the adoption of Nexus 7 will drive developers to build apps optimised for the tablets. The release of the newly announced Nexus 10 tablet should also help.
Google released three new Nexus devices yesterday including Nexus 4 smartphone and 3G version of Nexus 7 tablet.
Almost a month ago, Google had stated that Google Play had 675,000 apps and games and users had downloaded these apps more 25 billion times.
