Sony India has revealed that plans to be among the top three smartphone manufacturers in the country.

“We want to be among the top three players by next year,” said Sony India’s Tadato Kimura at the Xperia Z launch on Tuesday. He also noted that mobile division aims its revenue contribution to match that of Bravia TV range.

Kimura stated that Sony has a 7.5 per cent smartphone market share at present and the company would continue to introduce new products in each price-segment every month to keep the momentum going.

He also noted that Sony is concentrating more on premium smartphone segment, where it currently hold 13 per cent of the market share more than its overall share and it plans to increase that to 30 per cent to become the top player in this segment.

With the launch Xperia Z Ultra, Sony now has a total of three premium smartphones in the country including Xperia Z and Z Ultra. The company recently also started an EMI and trade-in scheme for consumers, in which a consumer can exchange can his/ her own smartphone for Xperia Z/ ZL and get INR 5,000 discount on the price.

“We want affluent consumers who want to enjoy technology. The tablet market in India is low cost driven and we have no interest at all in that segment… we are aggressive in smartphones,” Tadato Kimura said.
