Airtel has revealed on Twitter that it plans to release 4G LTE support for smartphones in Bangalore this month. The telecom operator has not revealed any details on how it is going to do this – Circuit Switched FallBack or voice-over LTE but we should be hearing more in the next three weeks.
As Airtel uses TD-LTE to provide 4G services, consumers will need to have a smartphone with support for TD-LTE to use the service, which are not present in the Indian market right now. It is possible that Airtel will tie-up with a smartphone vendor to provide such phones but no details are available at this point.
To remind you, Airtel had earlier released Huawei Ascend P1 smartphone with LTE support last year in Kolkata, where it initially started 4G services. The fate of that smartphone in unclear.
