Corning’s new Gorilla Glass will kill germs on your smartphone display

Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass Corning has unveiled the new Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass at CES 2014. Packing an antibacterial agent, this cover glass will actively kill the germs present on your smartphone display.

Given the fact how we use our smartphones and how often they are touched and used by other people, it should be no surprise that they contain a boatload of germs. So, Corning has come up with the new Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass, which contains ionic silver on its surface. This antibacterial agent keeps the touch-surface of your smartphone or other electronics items clean by actively killing the bacteria and microbes.

“Corning’s Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass inhibits the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi, and bacteria because of its built-in antimicrobial property, which is intrinsic to the glass and effective for the lifetime of a device. This innovation combines best-in-class antimicrobial function without compromising Gorilla Glass properties,” said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Specialty Materials.

Some manufacturers have already started using the new Antimicrobial Gorilla Glass in their products but there is no word on when we will see the first smartphones with this Gorilla Glass.
