Samsung, Google sign patent license agreement

Google and SamsungTo fend off the increasing number of patent trolls, Google and Samsung have announced that they have signed a mutual patent cross-license agreement. As a part of this agreement, both the companies will benefit from their existing patents as well as those filed in the next ten years.

“We’re pleased to enter into a cross-license with our partner Samsung. By working together on agreements like this, companies can reduce the potential for litigation and focus instead on innovation,” said Allen Lo, Deputy General Counsel for Patents at Google.

The companies have not revealed any specifics but this cross-licensing agreement is a big positive for both the firms given the patent court-battles happening all around us.

“This agreement with Google is highly significant for the technology industry. Samsung and Google are showing the rest of the industry that there is more to gain from cooperating than engaging in unnecessary patent disputes,” said Dr. Seungho Ahn, the Head of Samsung’s Intellectual Property Center.
