Samsung has added yet another smartwatch to its growing portfolio of wearable devices. The company on Thursday announced the new Gear S smartwatch, which sports a curved Super AMOLED display and includes built-in 3G connectivity. It is the first smartwatch from the company, which can function without a smartphone.
“Samsung is leading this exciting and rapidly developing wearable category through progressive innovation. The Samsung Gear S redefines the idea of the smart wearable and the culture of mobile communication. It will let consumers live a truly connected life anywhere, anytime,” said JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics.
Coming to the specifications, the Gear S features a 2-inch 360x480p display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and 300 mAh battery. The smartwatch also comes with accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, heart rate sensor, ambient light sensor, UV sensor, and barometer. In addition, Samsung has included Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi, GPS/ Glonass and 2G/ 3G support.
The Gear S is also water and dust resistant and runs on Tizen wearable platform. According to Samsung, Samsung Gear S will go on sale in global markets in phases beginning October.
Samsung Gear Circle
Alongside Gear S, Samsung has also taken the wraps of Gear Circle wireless earphone, which can be paired with your smartphone to easily receive calls, listen to music, and or make voice commands.
According to Samsung, it features a magnetic lock which clasps around the user’s neck when not in use, as well as a vibrate function to signal incoming calls and notifications. It will be available starting October as well.
