In another attempt to un-clutter our inboxes, Google on Wednesday announced the launch of its new app called Inbox by Gmail, which is a new way to view emails.
“We get more email now than ever, important information is buried inside messages, and our most important tasks can slip through the cracks—especially when we’re working on our phones. For many of us, dealing with email has become a daily chore that distracts from what we really need to do—rather than helping us get those things done,” stated Sundar Pichai, SVP, Android, Chrome & Apps in blog post.
Available on Chrome, Android and iOS, the Inbox by Gmail basically includes three features – Bundles, Highlights & Reminders/ Assists – which will enhance your email experience.
According to Google, Bundles are an improved version of the categories that were introduced in Gmail last year. They allow the users deal with similar types of emails at once. Bundles will automatically group once type of emails like statements, purchase receipts etc., thus letting the users review them at one go and them swiping them out of the way. The users can also teach Gmail in better grouping the emails.
Highlights, on the other hand, extract key information from emails and show that alongside the email header. The information could be anything ranging from flight itineraries, event information, and photos and documents.
Lastly, Reminders/ Assists are an enhanced version of Gmail tasks and they let the users prioritize stuff and also add their own reminders. Assists help in these task by providing information that you might need in getting the stuff done like if you write a Reminder to call the local hardware store, Inbox will supply the store’s phone number and tell you if it’s open.
“No matter what you need to remember, your inbox becomes a centralized place to keep track of the things you need to get back to,” noted Pichai in the blog post.
This is not all, Assists also add important information to your other emails like a link to web check-in in flight booking email or a map in restaurant reservation confirmation email. Snooze is another nifty addition that works as you would expect it go. It allows the users snooze the reminders for a later time or a specific location.
Excited by all these cool features and want Inbox by Gmail right now, there is a little problem, Inbox by Gmail is invite-only right now. So, you will need one of your friends with Inbox by Gmail to send you an invite or email Google at firstname.lastname@example.org requesting an invite.
