Opera Mini becomes third-most popular mobile app in India

Opera Mini 50 million usersOpera has announced that its Opera Mini browser has become the third-most popular mobile app in the Indian market. The browser recently crossed the 50-million-users milestone and joined the Facebook and Whatsapp in the top three club.

Despite the increasing popularity of smartphones in the country, which have access to far-better and more-featured browsers, Opera Mini continues to attract new users, thanks to its data-compression technology and support for multiple platforms. The lack of faster data-connections and comparably expensive 3G tariff, the users are attracted to the data-compression tech.

“Opera Mini’s famous compression technology, which makes browsing faster and helps users cut down on their data costs, is extremely relevant for India. It feels fantastic to be embraced by so many Indians and I’m confident that India will play a key role in Opera’s global vision of bringing the next billion people online,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, in a press release.

“The internet has the power to transform lives and we want everyone to have access to it. That’s why our browsers are designed to work on almost any internet-enabled device and in the toughest network conditions,” added Boilesen.
