Sony has announced that it is releasing the AOSP source-code (for Android 5.0) as well as binaries for a number of its Xperia-series smartphones. The source code and binaries can be used by the developers to build Lollipop-based custom ROMs or clean AOSP ROMs for these devices.
The smartphones for which you can get the source and binaries from Sony are Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact.
Obviously, the code shared by Sony will need some work to make it ready for daily use.
“As usual, you should be aware of that this software is not intended for daily use as there are important limitations. For example, the camera is not working and the modem is not enabled, which means you cannot take photos or make phone calls,” said Sony in a blog post.
