Myntra goes app-only this week, Flipkart to follow suit?

Myntra appsFashion e-retailer Myntra has announced that it is all set to close its website and will go app-only this week. The e-retailer had earlier shut-down its mobile website and now, it is the turn of the desktop version.

In an email to its members, the company on Saturday wrote that beginning May 15, the consumers will only be able to shop on Myntra via its mobile applications.

“This May 15th, 2015, Myntra is taking the first step towards the future of fashion shopping – we move on from the desktop to being exclusively available on the App. We believe fashion is a very personal experience. The best fashion experience therefore, is a truly personalised and engaging one that is only possible through the device that is closest to you. A device that understands you – your mobile,” wrote Myntra in the email.

If you don’t have the Myntra app, you can grab the Android version from Google Play. Refer to the respective app stores for other platforms. Starting Friday, the Myntra website will start redirecting the users to their apps.

India e-retail giant Flipkart, which owns Myntra, is also likely to follow suit, but the company is expected to wait for the impact of Myntra’s move to app-only retail. Like Myntra, Flipkart has also shut-down its mobile website.

While closing down mobile website to favour native app makes sense, ditching the desktop version of the website is a huge gamble. Myntra is right that apps are the future of shopping, but whether that future is here or not remains to be seen.
