Chinese smartphone maker Gionee on Wednesday unveiled the new Elife E8 and Marathon M5 smartphones at a press event in Beijing. There are hardly any surprises as most of the specifications of both smartphones had already leaked multiple times.
According to Gionee, the E8 will go on sale beginning July 15 in China at 3999 yuan ($644), while the Marathon M5 will be available starting June 25 at 2,299 yuan ($370). There is no word on the global or India roll-out right now, but I am digging for more information and will update this report as soon as I have anything.
Coming to the smartphones, Gionee Elife E8 is a phablet and sports a giant 6-inch screen with Quad-HD resolution (2560x1440p). The phone is powered by 2.0GHz MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core processor and runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with Amigo UI 3.1
On the imaging front, the company has packed a 24MP rear shooter with dual-tone LED flash & OIS in the E8, which, thanks to software enhancements, is capable of taking 120MP images. There is an 8MP secondary shooter as well on the front for your selfie needs.
Among other specifications, the Elife E8 includes 4G LTE support, dual-SIM connectivity, 3500 mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, 64GB of on-board storage and microSD card slot. The company has also included a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone.
Next up is Gionee Marathon M5, the smartphone comes with a mammoth 6020 mAh battery, which uses dual battery cell technology and consists of two 3010 mAh capacity cells. Despite the presence of such a large-capacity battery, the M5 is just 8.5mm thick. The phone can also be used as a power bank for other smartphones.
“The battery problem has been a key pain point of most mobile phone users for a long time yet there is no perfect solution. Gionee is willing to work on it and now we have M5,” said William Lu, president, Gionee.
In addition, Gionee has packed a 5.5-inch 720p HD AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot, and dual-SIM support in the M5. Other specifications include 13MP primary camera, 5MP front shooter, 1.3GHz MediaTek MT6735 quad-core processor and Android 5.0 Lollipop.
