Just over two weeks after its theatrical release in the United States and Canada, Natalie Portman-starrer Annihilation is now available on Netflix in other markets, including India, UK, and Australia.
Annihilation is a sci-fi horror film, directed by Alex Garland of Ex Machina fame. The film stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac.
To refresh your memory about why Annihilation is landing so quickly on Netflix, it wasn’t originally supposed to be one of the Netflix Originals. But, after a poorly received test-screening, Paramount Pictures and David Ellison of Skydance Media became concerned that the film was “too intellectual” and “too complicated.” When Alex Garland refused to make changes to the film, Paramount and Skydance decided to cut their losses and tied up with Netflix. Paramount got the responsibility of releasing the film in US, Canada and China, whereas Netflix is offering it in other markets.
Based on a book with the same name by Jeff VanderMeer, the Annihilation revolves around Lena (Natalie Portman), a biologist and former soldier, as she ventures into a hostile, unknown territory called Area X. The reviews of the film have been mixed.
“Though Garland’s film is decidedly creepy and often ravishing to look at, it’s hard to shake the sense that, beneath its highbrow patina, it is an intellectual muddle,” wrote Christopher Orr of The Atlantic.
“Director Alex Garland blends high concept sci-fi with stunning visuals and a dash of horror for an exciting female-led film in Annihilation,” noted Molly Freeman of Screen Rant.
